Carmella

Carmella may be small in size, but her story—and her impact—are anything but. Born in 2007 to Lily and Coco, Carmella’s early life took a difficult turn when she was rescued from Quaker Hill in Pawling, after the children who once adored the minis grew up and lost interest. What should have been a lifelong commitment became a situation of neglect, and Carmella was left without the care and consistency she needed.

When she arrived, Carmella was feral and unsure, having learned to rely only on herself. At Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue, her journey began with patience. No pressure—just time, consistency, and kindness. Slowly, Carmella began to trust. Step by step, she transformed from a wary, guarded mini into the affectionate, people-loving horse he is today.

And what a transformation it has been.

Today, Carmella serves as both an ambassador for LOHR and an active participant in our therapy sessions. She is especially loved by our younger clients, who are naturally drawn to her size, her softness, and her gentle presence. Carmella meets children exactly where they are—offering comfort, confidence, and connection in a way that feels safe and approachable. Beyond the farm, she carries that same impact into the community. Carmella has visited FDR, Monte’s, an art gallery in New Rochelle, and participated in DC Veterans lunches, bringing moments of joy and connection wherever she goes. Carmella’s journey is one of forgiveness, rehabilitation, and purpose. From feral beginnings to trusted partner and ambassador, she embodies what is possible when patience meets compassion. She not only found her place—she helps others find theirs.

By supporting Carmella, you help bring that connection into the world—whether in a quiet moment with a child or a meaningful visit in the community. Once unsure, now deeply trusted— Carmella proves that even the smallest horses can make the biggest difference.
